This statue was originally built in 1936 to mark Hernando DeSoto's westernmost point of exploration in the U.S. Legend has it that he met up with the Tula Indians here and had a fierce battle with them in 1541. In 1988 a storm knocked down the original statue made of sheet metal covered concrete. It was replaced with this bronze replica.

Too bad the original was lost - nice to see they cared enough to put up a replacement.
2nd shot could be a postcard! :)
