Those are super cool, JM. My stepmom would love them. She is a freak for gargoyles.

So am I !! I'll have to put the Nat'l Cathedral on my list of "must sees"! I told my husband what I want for a tombstone is 3 foot tall sitting gargoyle with an angel standing next to it with her hand on it's head like it was a pet. You can imagine the response I got, so I just keep reminding him they aren't evil...they keep evil away. Love, love, love them! Thanks for posting these great pictures of them!

Those things creep me out. I don't know the history behind them but I have always found them odd. They look really good in B&W.

They are used as waterspouts to direct water off of the roofs. They were created to be scary so that they could scare away evil...protectors of the cathedrals and the people.

They look evil themselves.

I'd like to know the symbolism of all the things they hold ...
Great series, JM!

love these, and lisa is right, they are protectors of the church... i love the one holding the basket..that would be great to take time out to see these and really notice all the details of them... great shooting jm...
i read a fictional piece of how these were really alive, and move so slowly during the day, you never notice how they shift. but they were made out of stone, and protected everything at night, so that when the good folk were asleep, these silent sentinals gave protection over the church, and its members. scaring away evil, and able to move fast when faced with demons and the like...
was a great story and according to the writer, she would have felt the angel would be right at home with the gargoyle as a pet.... great idea Lisa!!
