This is my 13 year old little sister, Brittany. I am trying to get the hang of doing portraits so we went out to practice today. Between the sun being so blindingly bright that she kept having to squint and the shady areas being so difficult to get a clear image..well, needless to say only a few out of many came out to my liking and about half of them are only so so. Oh well, just means we'll have to try again!

I don't do a lot of portraits and there are some folks on here that do so take what I say with a grain of salt. :)

First off I think you did a good job but some of the things I see that need improvement are cut off hands, fingers, maybe some on/off camera flash for tricky light situations, and watch your backgrounds for wires, poles, fences that get in the way. Practice makes for better shots and the fact you have a 13 year old sister who will model is amazing to me and very lucky for you.

I really like the B&W conversion you did on the second set.

I won't tell you what my sister was like when she was 13 but I can flat tell you she would have never modeled for me.

Great job and I'm looking forward to seeing some more.

Thanks, OFG. I really appreciate the advice. I was trying my hardest not to use the flash because I really hate the thing (all I have is the onboard), but looking back at these after I took them, I decided that I may just have to give in and use it anyway.
As for the 13 year old modeling for me...well, I'm a lot older than her and have helped raise her in many ways so she pretty much does whatever I tell her to! Between her and my 6 year old, I should get plenty of practice! I will have to take her out again soon and give this another go!

It's great that your sis is willing to model for you - and she's a beautiful model! :)

I think you did well given the sun situation. I'm just getting into portraits myself so I'm not the biggest person to help you. I really like the 4th one in the first set - really like her smile!

Having three teenagers, it amazes me how they can look like young adults one moment and then have the childlike qualities in another. You caught a great mix of both in her.

Thanks, Calliope and Anicole. I know what you mean, Anicole. I must say, I think its the young adult part that is starting to scare me!

I really liked one of the pictures above, but the more I looked at it, the more the colors looked a bit harsh to me. So, I toned it down a bit and added a bit of a smart blur to it. Any opinions on if its better or not?
