French, sculptor of Lincoln's statue, positioned Lincoln's hands in a manner that would display his two unique qualities. one of the president's hands is clenched, representing his strength and determination to see the war (civil war) to a successful conclusion. the other hand is an open, much more relaxed hand representing his compassionate warm nature. these qualities French included in his work help visitors truly remember Lincoln's personality.

Interesting narrative...I never knew that about the memorial. Wonderful picture of the 'compassionate' hand. Can't wait to see it in person.

i never knew all of that.... that is so interesting.... your picture really shows the details of his hands...
if you look at the pic, but dont read the narrative, you could assume that its Jesus hand... with the robe swirled over his arm...
wonderful perspective, jonmikal.... i truly love this shot.

I had been told when touring DC w/ Gallaudet University students that Lincoln's Hands formed his initials in Sign Language. The closed fist - his left hand forms an A, and his right hand forms an L....just thought I would share.

yes, i've heard that as well, but when searching this out i found the other to be a more common explanation. either one works for me :)

This is a great shot JM. I've only been to DC once, for a day. Definitely not enough time. It may be strange to say, but the thing I remember most about the Lincoln Memorial was the peaceful feeling that prevailed there. You did a great job capturing that.
