about a year ago, some artists got together and decided to do a project in association with the National Zoo. the idea was simply to promote the zoo through art using a DC theme. these bears were placed all over town. when the project was completed, the bears were sold to help raise money for zoo improvements. i wish i had known about the sale...i would love to have had one. not long ago while taking a family ride, we found one in a neighbors front yard. :)

this is just a sampling of what they did. i wasn't able to find them all.

i hope you enjoy the artwork.

Very nice bears. They remind me of the Hummel-Hummel figures that at one point in time were set up all over Hamburg. I have quite a collection of those somewhere, too (I never managed to capture all of them, either), but they were taken on film and I would need to sort out the prints and scan them to show you. Too much work right now ;).

(In Toronto we had moose, of course. Vandals kept ripping off their antlers, though.) I've also heard of cows (NYC and Switzerland)). I've gotta say, though, that I really like the panda bears as a subject matter, and the artwork on them is so creative. Thanks for tracking down and posting all these examples.

The Mooses we had were kinda cool. There is still a few kickin around. Next time I drive by one, I will snap y'all a shot.

These are gorgeous. It seems that every town has its own version. Here, we did turtles in honor of our Riverquarium.

We had a very similar project up here in Winnipeg involving polar bear sculptures. I think they auctioned them off at the end.
