Aaka & Aapa - Grandmother & Grandfather - Lilly & Donald Oktollik
My four sons GREAT grandparents

This is a typical whaling camp, we sleep outside for 2 months with no tents at 50 below zero ! This is where we eat, sleep, hunt 24/7
This image was taken in mid May @ midnight. Because we are exposed to the sunlight and the brilliant reflections, we become solar powered and can easily stay alert and awake for 3 days! When tired merly sit down on the sled covered with caribou skins and lean back and close your eyes, after a few hours "rest" your good to go, for another 3 days or longer!
Come learn the ways of the Eskimo. you just won't believe what your going to read and see.

All the parkys are hand made, sewn together using .. .. 'dental floss" !
Even the skinboats, (Umiaq) oo me ack are sewn together using a water tight square zig/zag type stitch, with dental floss!.. .. Mint or regular!
So.. If I type in the word "IGLOO".. .. I bet you think you know what that word is and what it means. I bet your wrong !
For thousands of years, in Alaska, above the Arctic Circle, an "Iglu' is a dwelling unit, made out of whale bones and sod !
http://majikimaje.com/igloo2.jpg
There are no O's or E's in the Inupiaq language. Iglu is the correct spelling, In fact: Iglu = one dwelling unit, Iglut = 2 Igluk = 3 or more.
Ice for a dwelling place is used in some parts of Canada & Greenland.
Most people do not know that most villages in Alaska were founded by the people of point hope. "Tikigaqmuit" Greenland was founded by the same people!
Tikigaq (Tigara) in the old days used to have a population of over 10,000 Inupiaq people. Then the Yankee & Portugese whaling companies arrived.
Through disease and mass starvation the population was reduced to just 190 people, The whales were decimated as well as the walruls and caribou.
Nothing was left for these people to eat.
i arrived in this village in 1981, for just 3 weeks of work. That was 27 years ago, I am still here!

This is home. Tikigaq ! Point Hope !
9 months of the year we are below zero, I wouldn't leave this place for all the money in the world! Our backyard is larger than most states, and some countries. Think about all the wide open space for freedom of hunting. You & the land. nothing else.. or is there ? you will not believe the stories I have, experienced and am able to share with you !
Yes we have internet here, dial up, Adsl , and wireless! Everyone has a computer in their house, just about everyone!

Every whaling camp is set up identical in every aspect, it doesn't matter which camp you are at, everything is in the same place, no matter which camp you visit.
